West Middlesex Hospital - Paediatrics

The existing childrens’ inpatient, day surgery, and A&E facilities for this hospital required both expansion and refurbishment to meet the increasing demands of the catchment area.

Working to a very tight budget and the client’s desire for further cost reduction, we delivered a high quality project by utilising existing functional equipment where possible, by sourcing alternate suppliers and by finding value engineered solutions.

The general works included the adjustment of existing partitions and doors and the installation of new internal stud work partitions, ceilings, floor finishes and sanitary ware.

The A&E portion of the project was undertaken in three phases; the creation of new consultant rooms from a seminar room, enabling us to demolish old consultant offices to expand the A&E area; the creation of a new clean utility and offices; and the creation of seven new trolley bays.

On the third floor, we carried out a complete demolition of the offices and training room to construct a new Day Unit. For the inpatients area, a new sensory room, wet rooms, ensuites, adolescent room, parents’ lounge, parents’ kitchen and a free bed bay were created, along with single side rooms with fold down beds for parents.

To ensure the continuation of smooth day to day operation of the facilities, in addition to our weekly meetings with ward staff and consultants, we held daily meetings with two separate staff groups. These consultations covered our planned activities for the day and the scheduled functioning of the services, enabling us to make any required adjustments to ensure ‘business as usual’ for the hospital throughout the project.
