London Museum of Water & Steam - Electrical

As an integral part of our major multi-disciplinary refurbishment for this Heritage Lottery funded project, our electrical division installed the power and lighting for the exhibits, the new café/visitor shop and the external areas.

Working to the architect’s museum quality lighting design, we coordinated our electrical programme with our fabric and mechanical teams to ensure smooth delivery.

The new layout of the exhibits needed to be flexible to accommodate the repositioning of the huge steam engines and their related artefacts. This meant that, working with suitably flexible design drawings, our scheme also had to be adapted in situ once the exhibits were secured in their final positions.

In addition to the challenges of a flexible design, we also had to work around weekend events for the museum, such as wedding receptions, providing temporary supplies to suit the various occasions.

A new sub main was replaced and a new distribution board installed along with electrical supplies to power the displays. Galvanised steel conduit was fitted to contain the electrical cabling, maintaining the historic effect and blending with the Victorian brickwork.

Working with the client at night to produce the desired lighting effects, scissor lighting and suspended track LED feature lights were installed, highlighting the varied sections of the displays with different coloured accent lighting.

Power and lighting were also installed to the new locomotive sheds and refurbished fire engine sheds and, to make life easy for the museum staff, ‘last man out’ switches were installed to turn off all the lighting upon final exit.
